The Women of Amphissa, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, 1887
Entranced, the maenads once wandered into the city of Amphissa, where, exhausted, they fell asleep in a public area. The women of the town formed a ring around them to watch and protect them as they slept, and then arranged for their safe passage home after they awoke, ensuring no passing male decided to take advantage of their defenceless state.
(Of course, they were more than able to defend themselves under normal circumstances, weren’t they Pentheus.)
